It was one of the great events of the sixth edition of the CANNESERIES festival, the special appearance of Sarah Michelle Gellar, the interpreter of the mythical character Buffy Summers from the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The American actor was invited to the festival to receive the CANAL+ Icon Award at the closing ceremony of his entire career.
An important television personality, Sarah Michelle Gellar began her acting career as a child. Spotted in the soap La Force du Destin, it exploded against the vampires of the Buffy series, which celebrated an entire generation in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The actor also stood out in cult films or revisited over time, such as Scream 2, Remembering Last Summer…, Sex Intentions, Scooby-Doo 1 and 2, Southland Tales or even Grudge. Worked on the small screen in The Ringer and Crazy and dubbing for The Simpsons, American Dad! Or Star Wars: Rebels.
The return of Sarah Michelle Gellar
The chief guest of the sixth edition of CANNESERIES, Sarah Michelle Gellar, also took part in a master class led by journalist Nora Bouadzun. In this special conversation, Sarah Michelle Gellar looks back at the beginnings of her career, the way she worked and her understanding of her profession as an actress and of course the influence of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on an entire generation.
He voted for what I deeply believe in achieving. It’s that when you bring people together – because I was going to say women – but really just people, you can achieve anything, and society often tends to. to pit us against each other.
And Buffy was telling him that. It wasn’t a TV show that was all about women, it was just all different people. and the ability to accept these differences.
Even today, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is recognized, but also re-watched and studied twenty years after its conclusion. And Sarah Michelle Gellar is grateful and proud to have played this role that truly marked her career, but also her fans:
“We all hope that one day we’ll have that chance to play a character in a movie or series that means so much to so many people, that really becomes a role model, an icon. It’s really incredible for me to see how much the audiovisual landscape has changed in twenty years.
And to see a series like Buffy continue to be seen, appreciated, supported by fans and new fans is really important. Because I realize that the world has changed once again, but the love that the fans have for the series and the character has remained intact.”

But Sarah Michelle Gellar also revealed why she stepped away from the spotlight a few years ago and took a career break. Even if overwork is one of the main reasons, other important elements convinced him to take this break:
“I was working a lot, I was very tired. Then also a lot happened at that time. A few years ago my partner on the screen, Robin Williams, died, which was very sad for me. It was also. The fact that my children were very young and I wanted to spend time with them.
I wanted to be a good parent and that takes time. Because we finally have a window that’s short enough to really enjoy being with our kids and our kids to really enjoy us as parents. So it was a good time to take a break and I had a blast. Of course, I was a little scared, because I told myself that the day I wanted to go back, I hoped that I would still have a place, that there would still be people who remember me and who want to see me.”

The fans did not forget this and answered the call when the actor returned to the front of the stage. From 2021, Sarah Michelle Gellar made her big comeback, first in dubbing, voicing Tila in the animated series, Masters of the Universe: Revelation. His fans were also surprised to find him as a guest star in the teen movie If you avenge me… on Netflix.
He can also be seen on Paramount+ in the series Wolf Pack, in which he portrays an expert arson detective hired to investigate a Los Angeles fire and its supernatural aftermath when a group of teenagers discover they are werewolves.
