It was published by Roger Werzel in 1935 TrailersIt tells the story of Andre, a tugboat captain, and Catherine, the wife of the cargo ship captain whose passengers he rescues.
This story quickly piqued the interest of director Jean Gremion. After the first version of the script, signed by the original author, and then with the intervention of screenwriters Charles Spack and André Caillat, the filmmaker decided to call Jacques Préver. With his modifications and dialogue writing, the latter gives even more weight to the impossible love that unites the two heroes.
On screen, the latter are played by Jean Gabin and Michelle Morgan. A mythical cinema couple, they first met in Marcel Carne’s Quai des Mists. The actor’s clear, mysterious and distant blue gaze inspired Prévert to one of the most famous lines of French cinema, uttered by his partner: “You have beautiful eyes, you know.”
Having also shared the poster for the 1939 adventure film The Coral Reef, here they are at the center of a wonderful melodrama, playing characters torn between marital fidelity and adulterous passion.
Jean Gabin and Michelle Morgan would be reunited on film with Jean Delanoy in 1952’s A Moment of Truth. Two years later, they would be part of the impressive cast of Napoleon by Sasha Guitry.
