Star Wars: Evan McGregor recounts his technical difficulties on the set of the second episode

Soon to be featured in the Disney + series “Obi-Wan Kenobi”, Evan McGregor, the famous Jedi translator in the Star Wars preface, recently spoke about his memories of the second episode and, in particular, the technical difficulties that arose on the set. .

While he will soon find himself in the house of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the infamous and reprehensible Disney + TV series dedicated to the legendary Jedi master, Evan McGregor, the translator of the Star Wars prelude character, recently took a few memories of filming on a microphone. Collider.

Twenty years later, the British actor particularly remembered the filming of the clone attack and the significant technical difficulties faced by the teams at a time when Hollywood was still taking its first steps in the digital realm.

“I do not know if the second episode was the first film to be digitally shot, but it was still my first experience shooting with a digital camera. (…)“, Said McGregor.

“These cameras look like dinosaurs. They were the latest technology, but compared to the cameras we use today, they had a huge umbilical cord protruding from the back. You could not change the lens, otherwise it took half an hour, so everything. Shot in zoom.”

These technical features – which were excluded on the set – became even more problematic, forcing the film’s actors to duplicate all the dialogue:

“The wires were going to a huge tent that was set up in the corner of the set, which was literally humming. It was very noisy.”Recalls Evan McGregor.

“And during the post-production, they realized that the resulting sound was at exactly the same frequency as the human voice, so all the lines of the dialogue in the second episode had to be rewritten. None of the original dialogues have been released. “Because the cameras were very new and none of the defects have been fixed yet.”

In the early 2000s, George Lucas and his teams suffered in the digital realm. Two decades later, again in the distant Star Wars galaxy, for the Obi-Wan series, Evan McGregor was fortunately able to see that tremendous progress had been made since then.
