Whether it’s the famous bullet time in the first part of the Matrix trilogy, the memorable face-to-face with Bodie (Patrick Swayze) in Point Break or the many spectacular stunts in the John Wick saga, we can easily find some beautiful sequences. That shaped our memories as viewers as we explore Keanu Reeves’ filmography.
But what about his own memories? to his taste? What are the feature films that moved him, the actors that offended him, the scenes that marked him forever?
In October 2014, as the first installment of the John Wick franchise was about to hit theaters, we asked Keanu Reeves what his favorite film series was. Then he told us about a film by Werner Herzog, practically unknown to the general public: La Ballade de Bruno.
Filmed in 1977, this disillusioned drama follows the misadventures of three Germans: Bruno, an ex-convict, his neighbor and a prostitute trying to escape her pimp. Together they decide to leave Berlin to try for a better life in America, in Wisconsin. But everything is far from what they hoped.
Particularly pessimistic and cynical, the film’s conclusion, in which Bruno kills himself after activating a whole series of crazy animal attractions that the firemen and police discover afterwards, is a sequence that caught the attention of Keanu Reeves:
“There’s a scene at the end of The Ballad of Bruno. We hear gunshots and the main character goes up some kind of rope. We know he’s brainwashed.”– the actor told us.
“And there’s a close-up of this chicken at the market. It’s on a plate. And it’s a dancing chicken. The guy puts in a coin and says, ‘We can’t stop the chicken dancing.’
Described by film critic Robert Ebert as “one of the strangest movies ever made”, The Ballad of Bruno will also be the last film that the group’s singer Ian Curtis will watch. Department of JoyUntil he killed himself in 1980.
