Wendy Darling, a young girl anxious to leave her childhood home, meets Peter Pan, a boy who refuses to grow up. Covering Captain Hook, we find Jude Law, who has traded in his British elegance for a more disturbing look for the occasion. Opposite him in the role of Peter Pan, Alexander Moloney takes his first steps in cinema. As for Wendy, she is played by Ever Anderson, who is none other than the daughter of Milla Jovovich and director Paul Wes Anderson.

Is it worth checking out?

The film adaptations of JM Barrie’s fairy tale are numerous. Among the most memorable, of course, we think of the 1953 Disney studio animated classic, the live-action sequel Hook, directed by Steven Spielberg with Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman, or even the version, much more classic but effective, released by PJ Hogan in 2003.

Twenty years later, while movies live action Streaming, the Disney+ platform once again modernizes this masterpiece of literature. The first surprise: we meet in management David LowryThe director was accustomed to independent productions for adults (A Ghost Story, The Green Knight), who after a stint at Disney rejoined the studio with Peter and Elliot Dragon.

This version takes the main lines of the original story and the famous animated film – you can even hear some similar musical notes. Nevertheless, it seduces with its visual identity, very faithful to its director’s style. This is where the feature manages to stand out.

If we ignore the avalanche of special effects – essentially the same -, Peter Pan and Wendy Chooses naturalistic aesthetics. Here, Neverland is unlike any other adaptation. The team settled in the Faroe Islands, Denmark, and the result on the screen is quite grand.

Long before its release, the film received a great response for the actors. Tinkerbell is played by Yara Shahid, a black woman, and some members of the Lost Boys clan are…girls.

In reality, this choice doesn’t affect the story in any way, and instead, it allows for a breath of fresh air in a tale that has been told many times.

Still among the “lost boys”, it is also possible to find a young 15-year-old actor with Down syndrome, Noah Matthew Matofsky. This is the first time that Disney has cast an actor with this genetic disease in one of its productions. A noteworthy fact, especially since it can allow the viewer to recognize himself in it.

Another important difference is the treatment of Captain Hook. The famous pirate, played by a very convincing Jude Law, is approached with more nuances this time around. The film sheds light on his past relationship with Peter Pan and paints the character as less of a puppet and more interesting. A desire to once again take this adaptation into previously unexplored territory.
