When the calendar marks the 29th, it means it’s gnocchi day! But do you know where this very popular ritual comes from? Of Italian origin, the tradition of luck dumplings landed in Brazil together with the country’s immigrants, especially between the 19th and 20th centuries.




Legend has it that, on the 29th of the fourth century, a Christian saint named St. Ptolemy he wandered through a village in Italy disguised as a traveller. The man then decided to stop at a house to ask for food and, although he was poor, the family served everyone seven units of dumplings.

After the meal, a surprise: under all the dishes were units of gold coins. A gift from the supposed traveler who was actually a saint. Interesting story, right? From then on, he started doing it superstition on the 29th!

Nowadays, the practice consists of eat dumplings on the 29th of each month, always with a banknote or coin of any value under the license plate. Also, the idea is for everyone to get up and eat the first seven dumplings, ordering them one by one. Then it’s just a matter of having fun.

Performance: 6 portions

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg of potatoes
  • Salt, pepper and basil to taste
  • 6 tablespoons of corn starch
  • 6 tablespoons of wheat flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 tablespoons of grated Parmesan
  • 2 1/2 cups prepared tomato sauce
  • Parmesan, grated to taste, for sprinkling

Method of preparation:

  1. Cook the potatoes in boiling salted water for 15 minutes or until tender.
  2. Pass through the juicer while still hot and transfer to a bowl.
  3. Add the cornstarch, flour, eggs, cheese, salt and pepper to taste, then mix until smooth.
  4. Place the mixture in a sturdy plastic bag and make a small cut in one end with scissors.
  5. Squeeze directly into a pan of boiling salted water, form balls and cook until they float to the surface
  6. Drain and place in a baking dish.
  7. Season with hot sauce, parmesan and basil
  8. Serve immediately.
