Long has remnants of Marvel being left behind, with no multiverses or complicated stuff; however, heart is lacking in creative decisions
When Guardians of the Galaxy was confirmed by wonder studies, many turned up their noses: they thought the characters were too exotic for the cinemas and that people wouldn’t buy the idea of a team formed by Chris Pratt, a raccoon, a barely speaking tree and a green woman. Those who did not believe in the potential of the Guardians, however, were wrong: the first film grossed 770 million dollars, the second exceeded 860 million dollars and, Thursday 4, another film in the saga arrives in cinemas.
This time, however, everything indicates that it is a farewell. After two profitable movies and a Christmas special, the characters are nearing retirement. After all, they are already part of the old Marvel, with which they are left in the past Iron man and the like, and will enter the wheel of renewals. Publicly, Dave Bautista (Drax), Zoe Saldana (Gamora) and Karen Gillan (Nebula) have already said they don’t intend to return to their characters – Bautista, by the way, also told the magazine Quality check that not filming Drax is, after all, a relief.
Plus there’s the whole story involving James Gunn, the director, screenwriter and main creative mind behind the entire conception of Guardians on the big screen. Between the second and third films, the director was fired from Marvel Studios after Twitter users discovered some problematic tweets from Gunn. Marvel thought it was the end of the line. However, the cast rebelled and most of the actors said they would not return to their roles without the director. Marvel hired him for the film, but by then Gunn had already been co-opted by “competing” DC to helm the new cinematic universe.
Interlude
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 It is therefore a sort of interlude between Suicide squadthe first work of DC with the signature of Gunn, and this new phase of the director, in command of important projects of Warner Bros. Discovery and discovery of new heroes.
Interestingly, however, this farewell to the Guardians focuses not on Quill, the leader of the group played by Chris Pratt, but on Rocket Racoon (a talking raccoon, with voice work by Bradley Cooper). He’s the one who centers the entire story around him as the film begins with Adam Warlock (Will Poulter), a powerful Marvel character, chasing after the talking animal. Rocket is injured and so the group will have to go back to the raccoon’s origins to save him – and with that, breaking up, audiences finally know Rocket’s story.
It is, therefore, a very emotional film. From this union around the wounded character, Gunn works on elements of the script to talk about friendship, family and the importance of having people who are always by your side. In addition to a fair amount of minutes of the feature film, with its 2h30, essentially dedicated to creating a dystopia on laboratory tests that mistreat animals. It’s full circle for James Gunn’s vision of these characters, he tells the mag. collider.
“It was really important to me to tell that story, that’s what prompted me to write the first film,” he said. “I had this vision of this really awful past for this little animal that was taken, a little innocent creature, and turned into something that shouldn’t be, torn apart and put back together again. His life was painful and it was incredibly alone because there’s nothing else like it.And so this idea of Rocket was there from the beginning.
The film is far from perfect, or even the best of the trilogy – it’s a job to do for many of those involved, especially Gunn, Bautista and Saldana, who are tired of their roles. This ends up being reflected in the lack of heart in many creative decisions, such as the songs on the soundtrack – almost none stand out – and also in the interactions on the scene, without that freshness of the other two productions and the other Marvel Film studios.
new heroes
Anyway, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 can create connection. Not just because he’s one of the last remnants of this Marvel that is falling behind, making way for new heroes, but also because of the lack of effort to make heroes more than they are. No multiverses, no complicated stuff. They are characters on the margins, as they always have been, and they conquer for this very reason. They’re simple, weird, and fun.
And it can make you cry: During the press session, it was easy to see some people wipe away their tears and sniffle. But Gunn warns: They aren’t always tears of sadness. “It depends on how easily you cry. I know there are a lot of people who cry at screenings,” he explained to Collider. “But it’s not all sad tears, there are many tears of joy. There’s a lot of joy in the film. Everyone talks about emotion, and it’s emotional, but there’s a lot of joy.”
