Gabigol is going through a bad phase, he gets a ‘negative point’ at Flamengo, but tries to find his nose for goal again in 2023

Ídolo rubro-negro is the player with the most missed chances in the first three rounds of Brasileirão and hasn’t scored since February 15, against Voltaço

Since joining Flamengo, Gabigol has become an idol with goals for the Copa Libertadores titles, in 2019 and 2022, and his traditional celebration, which has won over fans and children. The striker, who boasts eleven trophies for the club, is however living with the bad phase having only scored twice in his last fifteen games, both from penalties.

That said, the last time the number 10 scored a goal with the ball in motion was on February 15, when he scored a brace against Volta Redonda, for the carioca championship. It should be noted that the striker plays another role with Pedro’s presence on the pitch, but the pair worked under the management of Dorival Júnior last year.

The reflection of the bad phase was wide open in the 3-2 setback for Botafogo, in Maracanã, last Sunday. The player had at least three chances to swing Lucas Perri on goal, but failed to finish. Despite his importance in the squad, the athlete has not been spared by the fans who, on social media, have woven various criticisms of his recent performance, especially against Alvinegro.

According to data from the ‘Sofascore’ portal, Gabigol is the player who missed the clearest chances to score (five, in total) in the first three rounds of the Brazilian championship. The athlete scored a goal from the penalty spot on his debut against Coritiba, also at the Maracanã, but showed numbers below expectations. In this scenario, it took 256 minutes to fill the net with just 17% of chances converted in the competition.

With Pedro up front, the number 10 played an important role on the right, helping with the construction and opening up the corridor for Wesley to explore. However, Flamengo lacked the creative force in the first phase, against Glorioso, and the choice of Ayrton Lucas in midfield had no effect. After the signing of Everton Ribeiro, the squad started to build more and it was at this time that the Rossoneri idol had clear chances, but lacked efficiency and tranquillity.

It will be up to Jorge Sampaoli, still at the beginning of his career, to enhance the football of his forward, who has experienced moments of protagonism in this generation, and to find balance between the lines. The cast is qualified, but its main technical reference in construction, the Uruguayan Arrascaeta, was out due to physical problems.

Signed at the beginning of 2019, Gabriel has totaled 144 goals and 41 assists in 233 games for Flamengo. The athlete’s importance in the Rossoneri squad is undeniable, but it cannot be denied that the phase is not the best. It’s time for him to work psychologically as well, since every goal lost can lead to insecurity in the decision-making process and in the search for good football once upon a time.
