Against Del Valle, Corinthians finds a decisive midfielder for the San Paolo 2019 title

Corinthians and Independiente del Valle face off this Tuesday, for the third round of the group stage of the Copa Libertadores. The match marks Timão’s reunion with midfielder Junior Sornoza, who played an important role in São Paulo’s 2019 title.

In the final of the Paulista Championship of that edition, Corinthians faced São Paulo in two games. In the first leg, at Morumbi, the teams drew 0-0, while in the second leg Alvinegro won the title with a 2-1 draw at the Neo Química Arena.

After not playing in the first leg, Sornoza started in the second leg and had a decisive participation in the title. In the final stretch of the match, when the score remained level, the Ecuadorian midfielder threw a ball from midfield to Vagner Love, and finished it in first place for the back of the net.

If Sornoza’s spell at Corinthians wasn’t brilliant, the goal is constantly remembered by the fans. Conquering the state in 2019 was the latest title for Timão, who are now looking to rediscover the paths of victory with Vanderlei Luxemburgo.

For Corinthians, Sornoza played 46 games, starting 41 times. During this period he scored one goal and dished out seven assists.

Sornoza is one of the highlights of Independiente del Valle, being an absolute starter as a midfielder by creation. Since he returned to the club in 2021, the athlete has 18 goals and 14 assists.

Corinthians and Del Valle face off this Tuesday, at 21:00 (Brasilia time), at the Neo Química Arena. The match is considered very important given the table for the knockout phase of the Copa Libertadores and marks the debut of Vanderlei Luxemburgo in charge of Timão.
