After twenty years of negotiations, Walt Disney finally gets the rights to the novel Mary Poppins Pamela L. by Travers (the story itself was told in the feature film In the Shadow of Mary, released in 2014).
Directed by Robert Stevenson, the film adaptation of the adventures of this magical nanny, who literally fell from the sky to help the children of the Banks family, is transformed into a musical that combines live action and animated sequences.
We especially remember the scene when Mary Poppins, Jane and Michael dive into their friend Bertie’s painting. A world of all possibilities, where only the most extravagant of the extravagant can express their feelings: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! An energetic and colorful moment where technical mastery is integrated into the choreography in joyful fun.
A testament to the work of Walt Disney, who died two years after the film’s release, Mary Poppins was crowned with five Oscars: Best Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Original Song (for the title Chem Chem Chimney), Best Music and Best Actress for Julie Andrews, whose film career really took off.
