The spectacular transformation of David Verdaguer into the comedian Eugenio for the new David Trueba film

Entitled ‘They know that’ because of the iconic phrase with which each joke began, the film will review the early years of the Catalan comedian.

One of the most iconic comedians in our history jumps to the big screen: Eugenio will have a biopic by David Trueba, who writes and directs the film ‘Saben aquell’. The first image published by the production lets us see the brilliant transformation of his protagonist, David Verdaguer, with a thick beard, darkened glasses and a lit cigarette that were never missing in a performance by the Catalan comedian.

Set in Barcelona in the 60s and 70s, ‘Saben aquell’ will cover the early years of Eugenio’s (real name Eugeni Jofra Bofarull) career and how he managed to become one of the most recognised, beloved and legendary comedians in Spain. Who hasn’t ever heard one of his classics ‘You know the one I said…’, the iconic phrase that always started his jokes? Now That phrase becomes the title of Trueba’s film, which will star David Verdaguer as Eugenio and Carolina Yuste as Conchita, his first wife..

The filming of the film has started this week and that is why we can enjoy this first photo with the complete characterization of Verdaguer. The cast is completed by Pedro Casablanc, Marina Salas and Ramon Fontserè along with various characters who were part of Eugenio’s professional environment and who play themselves.

Trueba directs the film from a script by Albert Espinosa, which in turn has been based on the books ‘Eugenio’ and ‘They know that I gave’ by Gerard Jofra, the humorist’s son. “This is a movie about humor. And about survival. Eugenio was one of the most popular comedians of the Transition. Everything in his appearance showed that he was at odds with humor. A serious man, with no gestures, sheltered behind smoked glasses and a black shirt, with a smoking cigarette behind a microphone, would become the culprit of making an entire country laugh. But what was hidden inside it?”, explains Trueba.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents this production by Ikiru Films, Atresmedia Cine and La Terraza Films, with the participation of Atresmedia, Movistar+, HBO Max and Televisió de Catalunya, with the support of ICEC.

This is how the official synopsis reads:

“Barcelona, late 60s. Eugenio Jofra, a young jeweler, meets Conchita on a bus. The crush is instant and the two begin the love story of their lives. Eugenio learns to play the guitar to accompany Conchita , for which he will have to fight against stage fright. Thus begins the musical career of ‘Els dos’. When Conchita has to leave Barcelona for two weeks, she convinces Eugenio to carry out the performances by himself. When he returns , Eugenio has become a phenomenon of humor underground from the city. Little by little, between the two of them they will build the character: the glasses, the black shirt, the stool, the cigarettes and the tube glass, which will become an unexpected success in a depressed Spain that desperately seeks to laugh with that singular comedian who He starts all his jokes with ‘You know that…'”.
