Gabigol becomes Brazilian top scorer in the Libertadores, but Flamengo takes the equalizer from Racing

The Rossoneri open the scoring, but do not take advantage of the numerical advantage on the pitch and leave Avellaneda with only one point in their pocket

Gabigol scored the goal this Thursday, at the Presidente Perón stadium, in Avellaneda, and stood alone as the greatest Brazilian goalscorer in the liberatorsbut it wasn’t enough for Flamengo to overcome the Racing. The duel between the Rossoneri and the Argentine teams, valid for the third round of group A of the Libertadores, ended in a draw 1 to 1 and had one expulsion for each side. Racing’s Hauche was sent off in the 25th minute of the first half, and Flamengo player Wesley was sent off in the second half.

The goal scored by Gabigol was his 30th in Libertadores games. With that he overtook Luizão, who scored 29 and with whom he had been level up until then. In addition to the record, the No. 10 returned to swinging the net with the ball rolling after 15 games. In this period, which lasted just over two months, he only scored two goals from penalties. The result, on a historic day, keeps the Rio team in second place in the group, with four points, three behind the leading Racing team.

Flamengo struggled to create at the start of the game, but didn’t give much space even to the hosts, who saw the scenario change radically by losing Hauche, who was sent off in the 25th minute. The striker, partner of former Flamengo player Paolo Guerrero in the attack of the Argentine team, received two yellow cards for hard fouls against Ayrton Lucas, in the interval of about a minute, and went to the locker room earlier after receiving the red.

Even with one more, the Rio team did not increase its offensive production so much and closed little. In any case, he managed to clear the board after a free-kick close to the left sideline of the penalty area, in the 47th minute. On the penalty kick, Pulgar plays in the centre, just behind the penalty spot, where Gabigol should strike first and score the historic goal.

Flamengo were unable to exploit their numerical superiority to increase the score and were worried about a possible penalty for Wesley’s touch of the hand. The VAR was called and no irregularities were found. Wesley himself left his side in a less comfortable situation after 25 minutes, as he was sent off for a foul near the box on Rojas and picked up a second yellow card. The equalizing goal follows, from a free kick, which Oroz scores very well to overcome Santos.
