Prime Video is entering a new market, the sexy teen movie market. The platform, which bought the rights to After Saga during COVID, offered Perfect Addiction last March. It returns this May 5 with Joli Désastre (whose only broadcast) uses the same codes. And the synopsis gives a little insight:
Abby is a wise young girl, but when she meets Travis, a passionate flirt, her life changes. Travis and Abby make a bet. If the young man loses, he will have to abstain from sex for a month, if Abby loses, she will have to live with Travis for a month…
Like the two examples mentioned above, Joli Désastre is also an adaptation of a novel – written by Jamie McGuire, which was a huge success. The cast includes Virginia Gardner (Marvel’s Runaways) and Dylan Sprouse (not to be confused with his twin Cole, who stars in Riverdale). A genre regular that we saw right back in 2 where he was already bringing the hero back. A component that was also directed by Roger Kumble, the director of Joli Désastre, and to which we also owe iconic sexual intentions in 2019.
This new Prime Video movie makes no secret of its ambition to target the same audience. All the ingredients are there: a not-so-shy young girl, a bad boy heartthrob who eventually falls in love with her, tension and scary scenes… Be careful, Joli Disaster is aimed at an informed audience because there are nudity and ole ole scenes. But don’t expect much from the story.
The film is even problematic in many ways when it comes to consent. After several years of progress on the subject, Jolie Disaster is a real step back, delivering sexist clichés (Bea is only attracted to Travis’ biceps and buttocks when the latter forces the former to sleep with her after a failed bet) and staging. A toxic relationship.
And we don’t have to finish with these two, because the second part – the beautiful wedding – has already been filmed. We imagine that Prime Video will also offer it to its subscribers around the world.
