Striking writers plan a protest at the MTV Awards

The Screen Writers Guild of America (WGA) plans to stage a protest during the MTV Movie & TV Awards, which will be held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. The protest is scheduled for this Friday evening (5/5), but the event will take place on Sunday (7/7).

The decision comes to clarify the union’s dissatisfaction after MTV guaranteed it would hold the ceremony, even during the strike and with the withdrawal of Drew Barrymore (“The Panthers”) to host the event. In support of the writers, Drew resigned Thursday (4/5).

Several award nominees also canceled their appearances in solidarity with the strikers. The guest list included the likes of Jamie Lee Curtis (“Everything and Everywhere at Once”), comedian Dave “Lil Dicky” Burd (“Dave”), Halle Bailey (“The Little Mermaid”), Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones and The Six”), Sarah Michelle Gellar (“Wolf Pack”), Anthony Ramos (“Blindspotting”), Stephanie Hsu (“Everything and Everywhere at Once”) and Tiffany Haddish (“After the Party”). Also, Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”) was supposed to receive the Comedy Genius Award.

MTV reportedly reframed the ceremony to hold it without presenters and screenwriters, using scenes from movies and series, guest appearances, and video winners as the basis.

The WGA has been on strike since Monday (2/5), after negotiations with studios and streaming platforms stalled. The MTV Movie & TV Awards will be the first awards ceremony to take place after the start of the shutdown.
