We still have hopes that Reynolds and Brimsley will meet again in the third season of ‘The Bridgertons’ after winning us over in the spin-off.
Spoilers for ‘Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story’ below
In the alternate universe of ‘The Bridgertons’, ‘Queen Charlotte’ is actually titled Rensley: A Captivating Tale of Two Butlers’. It’s not hard to imagine it again. The touching love story of Queen Charlotte and King George recedes into the background leaving room for Reynold (Freddie Dennis) and the romance with Brimsley to take the lead.
It has all the key elements of a Bridgiverse romance from the main story: a forbidden connection; palpable and fast passion. Not to mention the obstacles that rise between the two, threatening the duration of their relationship. While Jorge and Carlota’s story came to a bittersweet resolution, Reynold and Brimsley (or Rensley, as they’ll be known from now on) were pulled out of the final moments and many questions were left unanswered.
What happened to Reynolds? Is there hope that her love story will resurface in the third season of ‘The Bridgertons’?
Here’s what we know about the Rensley romance so far.
What happens to Brimsley and Reynolds in ‘Queen Charlotte’?
When it comes to Regency romances, ‘Queen Charlotte’ gives it to us. We are never without a heady love dilemma to obsess over. If it’s not Carlota and Jorge struggling to find a way to be together through sickness and health, we have Rensley stealing bonding moments in the face of the mounting pressures of his job.
Yet somehow they managed to tentatively envision a future together under the security of Jorge and Carlota’s budding relationship. “We’d serve them together,” Brimsley (Sam Clemmett) tells Reynolds in that loving and intimate bathroom scene.
“A lifetime,” Reynolds agreed with a smirk but somehow cautiously hopeful, and we sank back into our seats, fingers crossed for further protection of his love.
“Great love can work miracles,” Reynolds told his queen’s servant, and yet as we move towards the finale, Rensley’s secret dance is interspersed with the present Brimsley dancing wistfully just reminiscing, suggesting what contrary.
The absence of Reynolds and the lack of clarity that surrounds him is the corset that pricks our ribs, begging us to notice, threatening to rip that lyonnaise silk unless untied. So here we go.
Where is Queen Charlotte’s Reynolds in ‘The Bridgertons’?
In an interview with Digital SpyDennis and Clemmett responded as to Reynolds’ whereabouts and, hold on to your chair, it doesn’t look promising.
I like to think that he has gone on a very long vacation. No, I don’t know where she is. I really hope that at some point we find out, because like I said before, I love Reynolds. It would be a tremendous shame for that love story to disappear because I think it is very important. But I have no idea. I have absolutely no idea what happened. You would have to ask Shonda. The wait is also very frustrating for the fans. I understand them.
Despite the sadness that casts a shadow over the future of their relationship, there is a little more hope to hold on to.
In a recent interview with vultureHugh Sachs (aka the older Brimsley) shed some light on their lost romance.
There was a scene that we didn’t shoot, because it was cut, where I was going to meet the older Reynolds. She was the love of his life and for some reason they couldn’t stay together. So when they passed each other in the deleted scene hallway, it wasn’t a toxic moment. Because of the world they inhabited, being gay was still a punishable offense, and it just wasn’t possible.
The deleted scene offers Rensley fans some hope that the adult Reynolds could emerge in the third season of ‘The Bridgertons’. However, it’s also possible that the creators cut the scene to take his story in a different direction.
Whatever the case, matters of the heart are not so easily squashed; like Brimsley, Reynolds (wherever he is), still has deep feelings for the Queen’s man of his. At least according to Dennis.
When asked if Reynolds still holds a flame of love for Brimsley in the current time of ‘The Bridgertons’, Dennis replied:
A million percent yes, without a doubt. Like I said, I don’t know what’s going on. None of us know what’s up with Reynolds, but I have no doubt that wherever he is, he still loves Brimsley with all his heart.
A love like that surely deserves to be wrapped up in a meaningful way and we have faith that it will be so… if Shonda wants to.
All episodes of ‘Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story’ are available on Netflix along with the first two seasons of ‘The Bridgertons’.
