Guardians of the Galaxy 3 beats box office opening expectations

The film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has already grossed an impressive $282 million worldwide, including a staggering $168 million at the international box office.

Before the weekend, Disney’s superhero blockbuster was reported to gross between $130 million and $140 million overseas. Thanks to positive word of mouth, the estimates were revised on Sunday. This is great news for Marvel, as the current movie season will become more and more competitive with the release of Fast and furious 10 AND The little Mermaid again this month.

In North America, the conclusion to the Marvel trilogy about a group of intergalactic misfits grossed $114 million, making it the second-biggest domestic opening of the year, behind only Mario Bros. The film ($146 million).

Elsewhere in the world, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 got off to a good start in countries like China ($28.1 million), followed by the United Kingdom ($14.7 million), South Korea ($13.6 million), Mexico ($13 million) and France ( $8 million).

The comic book-based film has exceeded expectations in China, which is generally huge territory for Marvel but which is increasingly against most Hollywood films, aside from Avatar: The Way of Water.

The latest production of Guardians of the Galaxy – the 32nd film in the massive Marvel Cinematic Universe – was especially popular at Imax theaters, which contributed $25 million in ticket sales worldwide. That figure marks the biggest global opening of the year for Imax.

In terms of global ticket sales, the first two films of the Guardians of the Galaxy they were promising. The 2014 original ended its theatrical run with $439 million outside the United States alone and $773 million worldwide, while the sequel topped $863 million at the global box office.

James Gunn returned to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is his last Marvel film before taking over rivals DC Studios. Gripping story returns Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Zoe Saldaña as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax and Vin Diesel as Groot, as they embark on one last mission to protect the Rocket of Bradley Cooper from evil forces that threaten to tear the team apart.
