Los Hermanos inspires musicals that bring never-before-seen stories about the group’s songs

The show conceived by Michel Melamed brings four cubes that tell the trajectory of the refined Rio de Janeiro group that innovated MPB

Director, actor and playwright Michel Melamed he was taking his usual morning walk when his cell phone rang: the display showed the producers Felipe Argollo and Paula Rollo. “They invited me to undertake a project that had interested me months before, but that it was not possible to accept”, she says, who, after a personal interview, finally said yes. It was September of last year and, three months later, Melamed presented the text of LOs Hermanos – Prefab Musicalwhich opens on Saturday 13 at the Teatro Liberdade.

It is a show that has the songs of Los Hermanos as a starting point. “They were four discs, with a total of 64 songs, a sophisticated work which, like Shakespeare’s texts, dialogues with the present and whose value would have been recognized 100 years ago, how will it be 50 from today?, observes Melamed, who he sought an original format for the musical, far from traditional biographies.

The first cube is illuminated in white and tells the story of the songs. The second, in blue, details how the letters were created. The third, illuminated in red, deals with the melody and, finally, the fourth cube, in green, reproduces scenes from the trajectory of the quartet. “It is on this assembly line, in this prefabricated house, that the formation of the group is built in front of the public”.

It is a ten-year history, which began in 1997 when the then students of Rio de Janeiro Marcello Camelo (journalism) e Rodrigo Barba (psychology) formed a band that balanced the weight of hardcore with the lightness of lyrics about love. Two years later, with the presence of Rodrigo Amarante AND Bruno Medinathe disc is out Los Hermanos which brought the quartet to the national scene. The success of the album was led by the song Anna Júlia (also recorded in English by ex-Beatle George Harrison in 2001), but it was there too acidity, Discovery, Spring AND Have mercy.

AESTHETICS. With their ability to innovate, the group has shown sonic refinement with each new album, the result of aesthetic choices and a willingness to experiment, to look for new things. In their four albums Los Hermanos, Block Me Alone, Ventura, the quartet offered a majority of songs of great beauty, simple arrangements, thoughtful lyrics and constant signs of professional maturity. Soon, the few who didn’t know the repertoire felt out of place, because one of the most impressive things about the group’s shows is that everyone sang absolutely all the lyrics.

Ariane, among other things, is part of the cast which also has seven performers (there are also seven musicians), all chosen by selection. “I wanted a plural group, one that well represented this specific lack of classification of Los Hermanos,” says Melamed who, out of 800 applicants, chose eight artists differing by race and sexual orientation.

Melamed also sought the support of the group when drafting the text, especially of Rodrigo Amarante. “It was early in the process, when I was still finding my way,” he says. “Because the first cube tells the story of the songs, I spoke to Amarante looking for information on three specific songs, but he ended up telling me all of them, remembering the details of the compositions. They are little known stories that are revealed by the show».
