After conceding goals in six consecutive games, Palmeiras managed this Sunday’s 5-0 victory over Goiás for the fourth round of the Brazilian championship, keeping the goal scoreless for the second consecutive game of the season. In a press conference, coach Abel Ferreira congratulated his defense
“To defend well, you need a precise commitment. It’s more difficult for the players to be willing to help the team in this defensive, running-up moment. Luckily I have players with character, we saw today. Serious and focused players, who give their best for the best result. Kudos to the team’s defense. I don’t just talk to the back four and the goalkeeper. We started defending from the center of the field up to the goalkeeper. And the attack is from the goalkeeper to the forward,” he said.
However, the coach also warned that there is no need to make a big fuss when the squad is leaked in some matches.
“Sometimes we concede goals in two games in a row, in separate competitions, and the press starts saying we start conceding… we have to be calm. Even now that we have the best attack we are the best, there is always room for improvement, not always when we concede goals we are the worst,” he analyzed.
“There are goals that are my problems, questions of strategy, game plan, positioning. There are rules that we have to respect. And when these rules are not followed, we call attention, both in training and in video,” he concluded .
With the beating of Goiás, Alviverde, who got their first away win in the Brasileirão, moved up to second place, with 10 points, two less than Botafogo, who beat Atlético-MG and follow on 100 %.
Palmeiras are back on the pitch this Wednesday, when they face Grêmio at the Allianz Parque, at 21:30 (Brasilia time), for the fifth round of the Brasileirão.
