BRASILIA, 09 MAY – The Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, is on an official visit to Brazil and spoke yesterday (8) in Sao Paulo about his intention to discuss the war in Ukraine with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Lula will receive Rutte at the Planalto Palace, in Brasilia, this afternoon (9) and, later, is expected to attend a dinner at the Itamaraty Palace.
The prime minister said he wanted to explain to Lula why support for Ukraine is an “existential” issue for the Netherlands and for the European Union.
“Self [Vladimir] If Putin succeeds in Ukraine, and I don’t think he will, it won’t end there. People are concerned about their safety, in Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris and in Europe,” Rutte added.
Lula defended the creation of a “club” of countries to facilitate peace in Ukraine, a proposal he discussed last Friday with the British prime minister, Rishi Sunak, in London. The EU and the US have criticized Lula for saying that Ukraine and Russia are equally to blame for the conflict in Eastern Europe.
Rutte arrived in Brazil together with a delegation of businessmen and should also include the agreement between Mercosur and the EU in the conversation with Lula. On Wednesday (10), the European official is expected to visit the Northeast region. .
