“I turned it down, initially, because I told the creative team that this was the kind of portrait we don’t want to see anymore in 2023.”
Ke Huy Quan, the winner of the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor of this year, has talked about one of his latest projects, ‘American Chinese, the series’, and has confessed that he had numerous doubts before finally accepting the project. After sweeping ‘Everything at once everywhere’, the actor once again shares the scene with Michelle Yeoh and Stephanie Hsu, in the Disney+ serial fiction.
What reasons made you doubt the project? “I remember when I first heard about this character, and when I was offered the part, I was terrified. In fact, I turned it down, initially, because I told the creative team that this was the kind of portrait we don’t want to see anymore in 2023,” commented Quan, during a question and answer session, which took place after a screening at Radio City Music Hall, last Sunday night.
Ke Huy Quan’s character is Freddy Wong, a man who encompasses several Asian stereotypes, which separate him from reality.
“After having a creative conversation with them, and knowing that in the last few episodes you get to meet Freddy Wongthe hardships he’s been through, what it means for him to represent this stereotypical image of Asians, and what it means for a young man like Jin Wang (Ben Wang)…”
“When you recognize his true identity, his morals and his value… It made me think that he could be interesting,” he continued saying. “I imagine that, somehow, they chose me because it’s still a way in which art can imitate life.”

The Serie, based on the original comics by Gene Luen Yang, Published in 2006, it follows the story of a teenager, Jin Wang, who becomes involved in a battle between Chinese mythological gods, after befriending a new student, Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu).
In addition to Quan, the cast also includes Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Ronny Chieng, Poppy Liu, Lisa Lu, and James Hong.
Yes, as we said before, the ‘Everything at Once Everywhere’ family has met again after their unrivaled Oscar run. Will the series receive a similar reception to the most awarded film of this year’s gala?

About the project, Ben Wang, its protagonist, recently spoke with Variety and commented: “The first time I read the comics was right after I auditioned. I had never heard of them growing up and wish I had. When I read them, I said, ‘Has Gene been spying on me? He was he hiding in a bush?’“
“It was a perfect comparison with almost every moment in my life, I had never experienced anything like it.”
The series will premiere on May 24 in streaming on Disney+.
