The event brought together representatives from different countries in Rome
With a special event promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this Tuesday (9) the Day of Italian archeology abroad was celebrated in Rome, which highlighted the country’s missions in the sector in the world.
According to government data, 246 actions were carried out in 37 UNESCO heritage sites in 2022 – and this year there is a request for authorization for another 280 missions.
“The archaeological, historical and artistic heritage represents the most authentic expression of a people capable of assimilating different cultures. It is a treasure trove of immeasurable riches [que devem] be preserved and transmitted to future generations”, said the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, at the beginning of the event.
According to the representative, today’s meeting in Rome “is a true recognition of all those who, with dedication, bring Italian excellence to the world every day” and that archaeological missions are “precious” for the country.
For his part, the Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, affirmed that the archaeologists are “honorary diplomats” who, even with “shoes for the desert”, manage to “open doors of dialogue in countries that are important to us, for stability and for peace and in countries where official diplomacy often cannot reach”.
“You play a fundamental role. You are the representation of all of Italy that works and gives weight to our country. Our foreign policy is like a great mosaic. There is a great perspective for our archeology and we can offer our ‘ know-how’, our experience”, underlined the Chancellor.
Tajani also recalled that, probably in June, there will be a meeting on archaeological heritage between Italy and various African countries.
Also present at the event was the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, who stressed that it is in archeology that Italians “find our roots and our identity”.
“We are experiencing a great moment on the archeology front. I want to recall the recent discovery of the bronzes in San Casciano dei Bagni, which will soon be exhibited here at the Quirinale, and the wedding carriage found in Civita Giuliana [Pompeia]. Since 1909, the year of establishment of the archaeological school, there have been many contributions that our archaeological missions have made to historical research in this field”, she highlighted.
In addition to the Italians, some international representatives also spoke, such as the Foreign Minister of Libya, Najla Mohammed El Mangoush, who underlined his “gratitude to the Italian government for the effort to defend our culture”.
“We are truly grateful for the efforts made by the Italian government to help us maintain our historical heritage, train our archaeologists and provide technological support for the restoration of damaged artifacts,” said El Mangoush. .
