PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) presented James Gunn with the Not a Number Award for “unshakable defense” to the animals presented in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

In a statement, the organization, one of the most recognized in animal activism, said the Marvel sequel deserved recognition for reminding viewers that “all animals deserve a life of freedom in the open air rather than being locked up in laboratory cages”.

PETA added that Gunn has grasped the essence and characteristics of the field of animal experiments well. Referring to Rocket as a number, for example, he reflected “a practice experimenters use to dissociate themselves from the sentient being they are afflicting.”

The device attached to the character to hold him is also similar to those used to test primates in laboratories, the organization said.

Through Rocket, James Gunn [diretor e roteirista do filme] give a face, a name and a personality to the millions of vulnerable animals undergoing similar experiments right now. PETA celebrates it as the best animal rights film of the year for helping audiences see animals as individuals and suggesting that just because we can experiment on them doesn’t mean we should.

PETA further reported that “although the National Institutes of Health spends nearly $20 billion annually funding animal testing, studies have shown that 95 percent of all new drugs that are safe and effective in animals fail in trials.” clinical studies on humans because they are dangerous”.

Like Rocket’s friends Lylla Teefs and Floor, most of the animals used in the labs are killed after enduring a lifetime of suffering. They are kept in cramped cages, often alone and maimed, infected with disease, specially bred to suffer from debilitating conditions, forced to endure various painful procedures, locked up in containment devices, bombarded with stimuli for prolonged periods of time, and often without adequate food.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released in theaters on May 4 and has already grossed an impressive $282 million worldwide, including a staggering $168 million at the international box office. The numbers surpassed Marvel’s projections, which were projected to gross between $130 million and $140 million.

The sequel, the last with the current cast, is still playing in theaters.
