The fourth edition of the Brazilian Olympic Movement Athlete Commissions Forum (CACOB) kicked off this Thursday, in Brasilia, with a big launch. All athletes interested in learning more about sports management followed the “Athlete Commission: voice and representation” course as a support tool.
The project was requested by CACOB, approved by the board of the Brazilian Olympic Committee and developed by the Brazilian Olympic Institute (IOB), the institution’s educational arm, with the eyes of the Commission.
“Believing that this project has achieved interesting objectives, we have launched the course for the Athlete Commissions. It is beautiful, very rich in content, and has the same line of thought, objective and ideas that gave birth to the Forum: to train and prepare athletes so that they can have a reliable, correct representation, with practical applicability in their daily life, understanding the importance of representation and doing it responsibly, with CACOB foundation and knowledge.
The course is free, in the distance format (EAD), and is aimed at all and all athletes who are part of the Athletes Commission or who wish to join or even just follow the performance of the Athletes Commission of the sports organization to which they belong. Applications are made through the COB website.
CACOB was an example of working on behalf of athletes in Brazil. For this reason, he saw the need to create the course to train athletes to act more efficiently and effectively in representing their peers, which is the same thing that gave rise to the Annual Forum.
The Athletes Commission: Voice and Representation course has been designed to support athletes in their mission to better understand the structure of sport in the country and understand the management and administration of sport for more consistent performance on the Athletes Commission.
“The reason for the Olympic Movement are the athletes and that is why the Athletes’ Commissions are acquiring more and more space and relevance in the sporting environment. If on the one hand the Commissions are growing, on the other the demand for a “more aware athlete, with more information, is growing at the same rate. Training for all athlete representatives has been considered fundamental by the COB in sports management”, he declared Soraya Carvalho, director of the IOB.
The second day of the Forum includes speeches on “Public policies aimed at athletes”, “Development of sport”, “Athletes’ Commission: a legal perspective” and “Image management on social networks”.
IV Forum of the Athletes’ Commissions
The Forum of Athletes’ Commissions of the Brazilian Olympic Movement was attended by 14 CACOB members and 21 representatives of the Athletes’ Commissions of Olympic sports, as well as guests such as President Paulo Wanderley, Vice-President Marco La Porta and Director of Communication Paolo Condé.
“CACOB is a foundational foundation that has been strengthened in recent years, with emphasis on the process of valuing athlete participation in COB administration. I feel proud to see athletes, now, off the field of play, continue to engage talent and dedication to the evolution of Brazilian sport. It is always necessary to go ahead with initiatives to broaden the debate among all the protagonists of sport, developing new skills and, therefore, the COB promotes the Forum and has developed the Course ‘Athletes’ Commission: voice and representativeness’,” said Paulo Wanderley as he opened the event.
Among the topics debated on the first day of the event, “Progress and results of the COB Athletes Commission”, in which Hortência Marcari reported what she has witnessed in the evolution of athlete representation since the creation of the first CACOB, in 2009, and Adriana Aparecida presented the results of a CACOB survey carried out with the Athletes’ Commissions. Among other things, the numbers showed a decline in athlete participation in the Commissions, a decrease in access to legal support, as well as an average of only four meetings per year.
“The numbers saddened us, but we must present them as a provocation for Commission representatives to continue in this movement of engagement. That is why the Forum exists. We are not only here to give good news, but also to identify failures, mistakes and channel our energy into solving them,” added Yane.
Good examples of works developed were the theme of the Round Table “The Athletes’ Commissions of the Confederations: Highlights and Challenges”, led by Poliana Okimoto and with the participation of Carlos Ramirez, president of the CA of the Brazilian Gymnastics Confederation, and by Cleiton Cezário, president of the CA of the Brazilian Athletics Confederation.
Diogo Silva, special adviser to the Ministry of Sport and former CACOB member, presented the theme “The importance of CACOB’s work in support of athletes”. Finally, Fabiano Peçanha, vice president of CACOB, concluded the day talking about Sports Integration.
