A 22-year-old Brazilian is defeated in the 75kg final and takes second place in his second participation in the tournament; Brazil equals the 2011 and 2013 seasons, with a final and a bronze
the brazilian Wanderley Pereira lost to the Cuban Yoenli Martinezthis Saturday, the decision of the 75 kg category in the Boxing World Championship, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The five jurors were unanimous in naming the representative of Cuba the winner.
For the silver medal, Wanderley, known as Holyfield, received the prize of US$100,000 (R$492,000), while Martinez received double: US$200,000 (R$984,000).
The duel was held at medium and long distances, which facilitated the Cuban’s fighting style. Wanderley played most of three rounds off guard in an attempt to lure his opponent in and use counterattacks, but with plenty of leg and torso movement Martinez largely dominated the contest.
Born in Conceição do Almeida, Bahia, Wanderley Pereira is 22 years old and has participated in his second edition of the World Championship. He is the fourth Brazilian to reach a final, repeating the feat of Everton Lopes (gold in 2011), Robson Conceição (silver in 2013) and Keno Marley Machado (silver in 2021).
The Brazilian team finished the World Cup with two medals. Wanderson de Oliveira (71kg) lost to Uzbek Saidjamshid Jafarov in the semifinals and won the bronze medal.
With Brazil’s two medals in Tashkent, the country equaled its best campaign in a single edition of the World Cup, repeating 2011 and 2013, when it reached a final and won a bronze (Everton Lopes gold and Esquiva bronze Falcão in 2011; silver Robson Conceição and Everton Lopes bronze in 2013).
