The “Page Borders” section allows you to create borders or frames in Word documents to highlight pages and sections in the Windows and macOS versions of the application
Inserting visual elements such as a border or frame into Word can help make a page stand out or give style to documents. The feature can be used to attract interest or reinforce a visual identity within a document.
Inserting frames on pages in Word does not reduce the text field of the document if you set a spacing relative to the edge of the page that does not exceed the margin.
How to create a frame in Word
You can create a border in Word in both the Windows and macOS app using the same methods. Some steps may vary in older versions of Word, and the “Borders and Shading” feature isn’t available in the web version of the app.
On Windows or macOS
- In the top tab, click “Design”;
- Go to “Page Borders”;
- Choose the border setting;
- Customize style, color and width;
- Select “Apply to” entire document or sections;
- Enter “Options” to adjust the edge distance;
- Click “OK” to apply.
To add borders and frames to specific parts of documents, such as paragraphs or images, select the section you want to highlight and then go to the “Design | Borders and Shading” area to apply the effect.
Border options in Word
The Design tab for creating borders in Word has four setting options:
- Box;
- Shadow;
- 3D;
- Costume.
These options can be changed between a variety of stroke styles and colors, with the following alternatives:
- Style;
- Color;
- Length;
- Art.
The position and distance of the frame can be configured within the “Borders and shading options” section, measuring from the page edge or text margin.
