The companies claim to defend the prosecution’s investigations and claim to be doubly damaged
Companies of sport bets claim to be victims of the football match manipulation scheme uncovered in investigation by the Public Prosecutor of Goiás (MP-GO)and they promise measures to improve the warning mechanisms capable of detect fraudulent bettors and enticing players willing to take a bribe.
Bookmaker representatives heard from Stadium they defend the MP’s investigations and say that companies are doubly punished for what is happening. They end up having to pay large sums to punters who have manipulated matches and their actions, and also have names associated with fraudulent schemes, in order to drive new punters away from their sites.
Wesley Cardia, chief executive of the Associação Nacional de Jogos e Loterias (ANJL), an entity representing 14 of Brazil’s top bookmakers, including Betano, the platform on which the gang placed tainted bets, according to a prosecutorial investigation of Goiás, stated that it is preparing to hire a compliance to expand the filters that detect suspicious bets.
“The biggest losers are the bookmakers. They are paying for manipulated bets. We are in permanent contact with the Brazilian authorities and contracting this service which can help detect criminal actions,” says Cardia. The ANJL informs that it is investing in sports integrity programs, monitoring of suspicious attitudes, prevention and blocking of suspicious accounts and bettors to further improve its controls, in order to curb illegal attitudes and behavior.
In response to impending industry regulation and game and betting manipulation in Brazilian football, the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming (IBJR) this week signed a sports betting integrity protection agreement with International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA), the global voice on integrity for the licensed betting industry. The main objective of the agreement, says the organization, is to develop activities that strengthen the monitoring against the manipulation of actions and the reliability in sports entities and online betting in the country.
“More than one hundred members centralize all the work of monitoring suspicious betting-related activities in IBIA”, explains André Gelfi, CEO of the IBJR, an entity born from the union of the groups Bet365, Flutter, Entain, Betsson Group, Betway Group, Yolo Group, Netbet Group, KTO Group and Rei do Pitaco, all bookmakers.
If a suspicious event is identified, the IBIA notifies FIFA, Uefa, CBF and other football-related organisations. “We need to improve the tools so that a professional athlete doesn’t get into such a situation. Education is the most appropriate word”, Gelfi opines. IBIA members can provide exclusive data to be used as evidence in investigations such as those currently underway in Brazil.
The International Betting Integrity Association’s monitoring and warning network is an anti-corruption tool that detects and reports suspicious activity in its members’ betting markets. This system tracks transactional activity tied to individual client accounts, which distinguishes it from trading tracking systems that focus on simple probability movements.
Salsa Technology, owner of Betmotion, says it has built-in monitoring systems that trigger alerts when bets appear that deviate from the standard and defy the chance. “We can even compare it to the mechanisms that regulate the financial system and the ups and downs of the stock exchanges”, underlines Peter Nolte, CEO of Betmotion.
“Very high bets on very unlikely outcomes have triggered alerts and this is another advantage of the regulated market. The more visibility this is, the more protected players and sports are.”

Esportes da Sorte welcomes the performance of the Public Prosecutor of Goiás investigate a group specialized in defrauding the results of Serie A and B matches of the Brazilian championship, as well as some state matches, with the aim of influencing bets worth millions. The Federal Police are also on the case with the determination of the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino.
“All the profit from these crimes is collected through betting on sites that offer sports in Brazil,” says Esportes da Sorte CEO Darwin Filho.
According to the executive, some measures have already been taken to prevent these events from happening again. “I see progress in terms of smooth communication between bookmakers and state federations, in order to facilitate the exchange of information on incompatible movements in some games. This information allows the federations to carry out internal checks in order to check for possible fraud,” he said. he points out.
How an interim measure will help regulate sports betting
All representatives of bookmakers who Stadium hearings are in favor of the regulation of the sector, although they disagree on some points of the text of the Provisional Provision being elaborated by the federal government and which will be submitted to the analysis of the parliamentarians in the National Congress.
“The regulation will bring security to companies and bettors, since institutions and companies are enabled to share data to detect suspicious behavior. It will also help to make relations with clubs, institutions, companies and bettors themselves more transparent” , evaluates Hans Schleier, marketing director of the Casa de Apostas.
For the sports lawyer Luciano Andrade Pinheiro, more than control mechanisms and fraud detection, coordinated action between the parties is needed to curb the fraudulent schemes of gamblers. “There really is a need for joint, coordinated action between bookmakers, government and sports administration bodies to educate, monitor and sanction athletes,” he opines.
