Marvel and the Infinity Stones: “I made all this C**** in 90 minutes”

Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, starring the Infinity Stones, were the culmination of Marvel’s Golden Age. If the stones already exist in the comics, the cinematic version of them needs to be reworked to make them easier to understand, and it was James Gunn who reinvented the whole thing in just 90 minutes!

It was in an interview given to Phase Zero while promoting Guardians of the Galaxy 3 that James Gunn returned to the topic. When asked about the scene in which the Collector (Benicio del Toro) explains what the Infinity Stones are, for the first time in the MCU, in the first installment of Guardians of the Galaxy, the director reveals – bursting with laughter – that he wrote it. The scene is only 1:30, but he didn’t expect the stones to become so important in the future of the saga.

In an hour and a half I wrote that scene, that’s what I came up with, what the Infinity Stones were, and it’s all based on that! They said, “We’re thinking about adding power stones,” and I thought that was cool, and I just made up those stones…! Here’s what happened!

Last year, James Gunn already admitted that he didn’t know what Marvel’s plans were for Infinity War and Endgame when he started working on Guardians of the Galaxy. While the mythology of the Infinity Stones seemed to be cobbled together and added piecemeal in each film without a very clear starting plan, it all worked out in the end and brought the MCU to its peak.

Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame will be reviewed on Disney+, as will all MCU films to date.
