The National Fair of Agrarian Reform, held in recent days in São Paulo, highlighted the closeness of the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to the Landless Movement (MST) on the eve of the inauguration of a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI ) in the Chamber which will investigate the actions of the group. The presence of ministers and Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin at the event annoyed rural representatives in Congress. Lula’s assistants, in turn, took advantage of the festive atmosphere of the fair to reject the intentions of the opposition to the CPI.
This Sunday 14, at the end of the event, the minister of the Secretariat for Social Communications (Secom), Paulo Pimenta, declared that the commission will turn against the opposition. “Anyone who imagines that this CPI will be a space to catch up with the MST will shoot themselves in the foot,” Pimenta said.
On Saturday, Agricultural Development Minister Paulo Teixeira mocked the CPI by saying deputies will find “very serious things” such as grape juice produced without slave labor – referring to reports of slavery-like activities in the Rio Grande. do On the cellars.
In addition to Pimenta, the PT ministers Márcio Macêdo (General Secretariat of the Presidency) and Luiz Marinho (Labor and Employment) also visited the fair this Sunday. They defended the partnership between the Executive and the social movements.
‘Hunger’
Marinho said the government “will make a difference to end hunger”, but only in collaboration with social movements. Pimenta went further and said that the government’s alliance with these groups – and, above all, with the MST – is crucial in tackling hunger and ensuring the creation of social programs.
On Saturday, greeted by a militant shouting “a warrior of the Brazilian people,” Alckmin said the lawmaker’s work is not “police-like” after being questioned about the CPI. “There are already many supervisory bodies,” said the deputy.
The agri-food bank in Congress accumulates a series of disagreements with the government, after the invasions promoted by the MST – including the production areas -, the criticisms of Agrishow, the largest sector fair in the country, and the interventions of the president himself.
On Thursday, Lula cited Agrishow and said that “some fascists in São Paulo” did not want Agriculture Minister Carlos Fávaro to attend the event. In addition, Alckmin was also invited to a luncheon sponsored by the ruralist caucus, which was uncomfortable with his vice president’s attendance at the MST trade show.
In this climate of growing tension, the mayor, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), will determine the establishment of the CPI after the nomination by the parties of the names that will integrate the commission. Deputy Ricardo Salles (PL-SP), former Minister of the Environment under Jair Bolsonaro (PL), is quoted as the speaker of the CPI.
