“Inventing new African-American heroes is important.”
When the trailer first came out ‘Jurassic World: Dominion‘, fans of the franchise quickly began to speculate who the newcomer would play. DeWanda Wise.
There were suggestions that DeWanda would make her ‘Jurassic World’ debut as Kelly Curtis, the daughter of Dr. Ian Malcolmwho was featured in ‘Jurassic Park: The Lost World’.
Of course, Kelly was originally played by Vanessa Lee Chesterand then it was confirmed that Wise’s character is someone else entirely: Kayla.
Now, ahead of the release of ‘Dominion’ next month, director Colin Trevorrow has explained why DeWanda was not included as Kelly and why the introduction of a new character is so “important”.
Talking with VarietyTrevorrow argued that the film wanted to “introduce a new hero who could potentially define the future of this franchise”.
He continued: “We’ve had the opportunity to create, I hope, someone that young girls will dress up as on Halloween for years to come..”
“This is a global franchise for people from all over the world. Inventing new black heroes is important.”
DeWanda Wise admitted that she would not have accepted the role of Kelly anyway. “Vanessa is present and she is an actress,” she explained.
“It’s one thing to reboot a character like Nola Darling 30 years later, and it’s another thing to say, ‘I’m this person now.'”
As much as some fans have wanted to see Kelly return, the response to Kayla has been “overwhelmingly” positive so far, Wise said.
“It’s a very pure fan base. Maybe it’s the love of dinosaurs, but everyone wants to see you win. I don’t think that’s common. They’re like, ‘We can’t wait to meet her.'”
And for those still looking for a throwback to the original series of ‘jurassic-park‘, they are always Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern. What more can you ask for, huh?
