Dissidents may also lose government appointments and hold seats on the CPI
BRASÍLIA – The government will not accept the PT’s opposition to the fiscal framework law. The warning was launched on Monday 15 by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during a meeting with the ministers of government coordination and the leaders of the Chamber and Senate, at the Planalto Palace.
Lula said that, even if there will not be an agreement on the project as the PT would like, he will not admit splits in his party. In practice, dissidents may also lose government posts and occupy seats on the Parliamentary Commissions of Inquiry (CPI). Of the 37 ministries, ten are headed by PT affiliates.
Last week, the Stadium it emerged that Planalto vetoed the name of the deputy Lindbergh Farias (PT-RJ) to compose the CPI of the coup acts as “punishment” for criticizing the proposal of the new fiscal peg.
OR Stadium noted that, for Lula, the most important thing in the current project is to keep intact the policy of valuing the minimum wage and also Bolsa Família. One of the ideas under discussion, on the other hand, envisages that in the event of non-compliance with the objective, “triggers” are triggered to block spending.
The president would even agree to negotiate restrictions on new tax breaks and expenses with civil servants and civil service exams, for example. He does not admit, however, that the adjustment of public accounts affects the Bolsa Família, the minimum and not even the Fund for the maintenance and development of basic education (Fundeb).
After the meeting in Planalto, the finance minister, Fernando Haddad, met with the mayor, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), and the rapporteur of the project, Cláudio Cajado (PP-BA), to agree on the voting strategy in the coming days. The government team split to try to convince deputies of the importance of approving the new framework.
Task force
Cajado promises to present the text this Monday, with several changes. The list also includes political sanctions for the president of the republic, such as ineligibility, if no showdown is foreseen. All of these changes, however, are still under review.
In the task force assembled by Lula to approve the framework, Haddad was in charge of sending members of his technical team to explain the impact of the measures to the deputies.
At the same time, the minister of institutional relations, Alexandre Padilha, will hold talks with the leaders of allied parties, such as the MDB and PDT, and also with those who declare themselves independent, such as União Brasil, PSD, Republicanos and Podemos.
The head of government in the Chamber, José Guimarães (PT-CE), has in turn assumed the mission of “fighting the bulls” against the PT and other left-wing parties.
“I hope the government steps up and defends the original plan presented by Haddad,” al said Stadium Lindbergh Farias, one of the most critical PT members of the project. “The text is still controversial and I am very worried because they want to reintroduce the expenditure contingency if there is no increase in revenue. But, in a scenario like this, where will we cut?”, he asked.
For Lindbergh, it is one thing to defend Haddad’s fiscal framework and quite another, the even tougher Cajado report. “Until now, this looks like a fiscal austerity treaty to attack the minimum wage policy in the Lula government,” summed up the deputy.
