Coming soon to Disney+: 25 years ago they stripped down and they’re back!

25 years ago The Full Monty hit the big screen. This little English film pulled out all the stops and won audiences across the world. With nostalgia in full swing, Disney+ is bringing back one of the most popular British comedy series of recent years, also known as The Full Monty!

Peter Cattaneo’s feature film, which hit theaters in 1997, became an almost instant classic. The film follows the lives of a group of men who live in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, a once important steel town. After the factory closes, the men find themselves without purpose or direction.

However, a small group of friends among these men finds an unusual way to earn money: striptease. The film follows these men as they prepare to take the plunge and proves that sometimes you have to jump into the void, even when all hope seems lost. Accordingly, the sequel will follow the same group of friends as they navigate their way through the present day world.

The trailer shows what the characters from the original film have been up to 25 years since they first stripped down. This is modern day Sheffield, experiencing a collapse in health, education and employment.

And the strippers of the day are now firmly heading into the third age. They all think about their purpose in life and how they failed. Dave Horsfall, played by Mark Eddy, must come to terms with the regret of not having a child. Meanwhile, Gaz, played by Robert Carlyle, faces tensions with his teenage daughter, Destiny, played by Talitha Wing. Leslie Sharp, who plays Dave’s wife Jean, is also back in this project.

This trailer promises to rediscover the charm of the original film, but with a modern twist. The tone feels like the series will balance both comedy and drama, never dwelling on the dramas of modern life, but presenting a harsh reality with the self-deprecating and honest humor that is the original film’s signature and so appreciated.

We are excited to reunite all the Monty men, now surrounded by a chaotic crowd of children, grandchildren, pets and other passers-by.“, says Simon Beaufoy, screenwriter of the film and co-creator of the series varietyTo see what life in Sheffield looks like twenty-five years on“Whether they continue to strip in the meantime remains to be seen.”

The Full Monty premieres June 14 on Disney+. Meanwhile, the 1997 film is already available on the platform.
