Our story begins in the 8th century in a small Scandinavian village called Kattegat, home to Ragnar Lothbrok, a Viking warrior and farmer secretly working on a project that will change the Viking world. Aspiring to explore and raid the distant shores of the oceans, his ambition does not sit well with the local chieftain, who prefers to continue plundering the impoverished East rather than travel to the unknown West. But Ragnar, defiant, once again joins forces with his friend Floki, a prominent boat builder, to build ships capable of conquering the stormy seas of the North. Vikings is the story of this famous Ragnar, but also of his family, his sons, his wives and his war companions, all as famous as he.
With its stunning series, Michael Hirst’s series (The Tudors) – a gem on the American History Channel, which will be broadcast between 2013 and 2020 – contrasts with the brutal and mysterious Viking world it depicts, a world of conquest and conflict, full of spirituality. And Mythology: A One-Way Ticket to Valhalla! Here we believe in Odin, Thor and company, and seek eternal glory at all costs.
Cryptic, graphic and epic, the historical drama is very loosely inspired by the Norse sagas of Ragnar ‘Lodbrok’, one of the most legendary Norse heroes, the famous scourge of England and France. These stories, less documented and based on oral tradition, already have a fictional part that is emphasized in the show. in fact Vikings Known for taking some real liberties, it weaves together many historical milestones, actually spanning decades, under Ragnar and his sons. Many of the characters featured in the show actually existed but did not live with the latter, such as Rollo, Ragnar’s brother/enemy in the fiction, who was in no way related to the latter. Hybrid events, composite characters, fictional adventures: it’s all there.
However, the show is much more than its inconsistencies, it is a true journey through time into the heart of a mystical and mythical world that still fascinates all the same, a grand spectacle that benefits from brilliant cinematography, fabulous costumes and the performances of a breathtaking cast. Of course, we are talking about, among others, Travis Fimmel, who plays the resident Ragnar, and Katheryn Winnick, who gives life to the fierce Lagertha, one of the most “bad” heroines of the small screen. Added to this are real battle re-enactments and a magical soundtrack – by Trevor Morris and Wardruna – that takes you straight back to the Viking epics and introduces you to what awaits you in Valhalla (beyond Heaven obviously, but also a spin-off of the series).
