The president of the FPF regrets the cases of manipulation of bets in Brazil: “Our passion is under control”

The president of the São Paulo Football Federation (FPF), Reinaldo Carneiro Bastos, spoke on Wednesday about the betting manipulation scheme in Brazilian football, investigated by the Penalty Maximum operation. The declaration took place during an event held at the institution’s headquarters in Sao Paulo.

Reinaldo regretted the episode and also said that it puts the credibility and passion involved in sports “in check”. On the other hand, the leader spoke about the importance of debating the issue and finding solutions to curb the manipulation.

“The more you talk about it, the more you see a complaint, a suspension, the better. Eight athletes are already on preventive suspension, that’s what we need. We need action and attitude, taking these guys out of their comfort zone,” he commented the president of the FPF.

“That’s why we are here, to talk about it, to find solutions and find ways. Football needs you. Our passion is being brought under control, we will turn this game around and win,” he added.

The leader also said that the Paulista Federation is a pioneer in the fight against betting manipulation. According to Reinaldo, the body began to mobilize in favor of the issue in 2015 and has since collaborated with authorities and secretaries of justice in supervision and investigations.

Operation Maximum Penalty, commanded by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Goiás, is the new milestone in the fight against betting manipulation in Brazilian football. According to the investigations, it is estimated that at least 13 matches were tampered with, eight of the Brazilian Serie A 2022 championship, one of the Serie B 2022 and four of the state championships held in 2023 (Goiano, or Gaúcho, Mato-Grossense and Paulista).

So far, nine bettors and 15 players have already been denounced by the justice of Goiás, including Santos defender Eduardo Bauermann. However, more than 40 athletes are named in the investigations. Four of them preferred to agree and admitted their guilt, becoming witnesses in the case. Some have already been removed from their respective clubs, while others, such as Nino Paraíba, who was at América-MG, have had their contracts terminated.
