The new Stranger Things monster was made with practical effects, CG and a lot of lube

The Strange Things season 4 monster is quite different from its predecessors Demogorgon and Mind Flayer. La Vecna is a humanoid beast inspired by classic 1980s horror movie villains like Jason and Freddy Krueger. The monster was born from an idea of prosthetic designer Barrie Gower, who worked on Game of Thrones, Harry Potter and Chernobyl, and now makes its debut in the fourth season of the retro series.

As Amy Forsythe, head of makeup at Stranger Things, he told The Verge, Gower’s experience added a different dimension to the series. “The practical effects are a big part of 80s nostalgia, and that was missing from our show,” she explained. “So finally having someone with Barrie’s experience join the team now really elevated the show.”

According to Gower, the monster’s development process began with conceptual imagery by artist Michael Maher Jr. One of the main goals of the Stranger Things team “was to create the character as close to 100% practical effects as possible.”

For this, the designer created Vecna’s costume from several pieces glued directly to the actor’s skin. This gave the actor more freedom of movement, but required an editing process that took 6-7 hours of work.

Gower points out that many of the techniques used to create Vecna were already in use in the 1980s, but that the team had the advantage of having access to more modern materials. Some of these effects helped give the monster a slimy look. The implants were painted with a glossy silicone finish, but that alone wasn’t enough. “In the day [da filmagem] it has to be super viscous, so we use products like KY lubricant. We also used a product called UltraWet, a clear gel, which we rubbed all over his body, “Gower said.” It’s the kind of thing that, on set, if you put your hand on his shoulder, you’d regret it because he’s become all sticky “.

But not all of it is practical effects. The tentacles on Vecna’s back, for example, move supernaturally and were made by the series’ computer graphics team. The actor’s nose has also been digitally removed. But much of the monster seen in the series was done by the prosthetics and makeup teams.

“I’ve been working on projects where we create characters and, watching the show, you said to me, ‘Where’s the character we created? He has been completely changed! ‘ It was not like this [em Stranger Things]. It was a great collaboration with the digital effects team. “

In conclusion, Gower believes that attention to practical effects had a positive impact on the performance of the cast. “From their point of view, I think it’s nice to have something physical and practical on set that they can interact with,” she explained. “He was not a guy in a motion capture or chroma key suit. The monster was there in flesh and blood ”and goo, we might add.
