Netflix with ads reaches almost 5 million users

Netflix revealed that its recently launched ad-supported option reaches nearly 5 million monthly active users, executives announced Wednesday during a presentation highlighting the breadth of its programming for prospective advertisers.

The video streaming pioneer last November launched a cheaper option with ads in 12 markets, including the US and Brazil, as an alternative to traditional ad-free plans. This move is designed to attract more customers and add a new source of revenue amid heightened competition for online viewers.

On Wednesday, Netflix held its first advertiser rollout during the annual ritual known as “upfronts,” in which networks try to secure ad engagements for their upcoming series.

Netflix executives highlighted the company’s wide range of programming, from blockbusters to sci-fi Stranger things up to korean drama Round 6 and the action movie sequel starring Chris Hemsworth, Rescue 2.

No other entertainment company aspires to create great films and series in so many genres and countries, for such a large and diverse audience.

Jeremi Gorman, President of Worldwide Advertising at Netflix, said the number of global monthly active users has reached 5 million. Monthly Active Users counts all adult profiles used in an ad-supported account, with child profiles running no ads.

Netflix had 232.5 million paying subscribers worldwide by the end of March.

Executives said they plan to work with advertisers to create new types of advertising that would only be possible on a digital service. For example, a 30-minute commercial could take place over several days, with a story unfolding every time a viewer watches a show on Netflix, co-CEO Ted Sarandos said.

You can’t do that on linear TV because people don’t live on a single channel.
