It’s as thrilling as it is improbable, but above all, it’s a story that ends well. Netflix revealed on Twitter that a subscriber to its platform watching the documentary series Unsolved Mysteries recognized a young girl kidnapped by her mother in 2017.
Unsolved Mysteries viewers closed the case!

“A store owner in North Carolina identified Kayla Unbehoun, who was kidnapped by her mother in 2017, during the witness call in episode 9. Kayla, now 15, is expected to return to her family in Illinois.”
Her name is Kayla and she has been missing for 6 years since she returned to her mother, who lost custody of her to her ex-husband. Despite the police investigation, they were unable to locate the 9-year-old girl and her mother, Heather Unbehaun, to the point where they had to close the case without further action.
The story is quickly mentioned at the end of an episode of Unsolved Mysteries, a Netflix documentary series about cold cases, cases that are unsolved. Season 3 Episode 9 tells the story of two children kidnapped by one of their parents. The most recent images are interspersed with photos of other missing children, some of whom have been aged to reveal what they look like today. In this list we see Kayla and her mother:
That’s what led the Netflix subscriber, who worked at a store in Asheville, North Carolina, to meet the young girl, now 15, a few days ago. She immediately alerted the police, who were able to get Kayla to safety before her mother was arrested. He is currently being held on $250,000 bail awaiting trial.
As for Kayla’s father, who has never given up hope of finding his daughter, he can thank the police, but also this good Samaritan for being a true crime fan on Netflix.
