Netflix: Here’s an irreverent comedy with Jim Carrey you need to catch up on!

Discover or rediscover on Netflix Ace Ventura, the dog and cat detective directed by Tom Shadiak and one of the best comedies of the 90s, which launched Jim Carrey’s Hollywood career.

As the title suggests, Ace Ventura is an outspoken animal advocate who rehabilitates kidnapped dogs, stray cats and stolen canaries. When he is contacted by someone named Melissa (Courtney Cox) to find “Snow White”, the dolphin mascot for Miami’s American football team, his troubles begin.

Ace Ventura is a bit like “The Jim Carrey Show” by 1:30. The comic actor takes part in the script and competes with grimaces, body flexing and gravelly humor to get laughs from the audience and give himself a monumental calling card as this is his first feature film.

From the opening scene, where the deliveryman destroys the fragile supplies he’s about to deliver, the tone is set: we’re in for a comedy that will go against the grain. Iconic moments follow one after the other, from the mental hospital sequence to the bay window to Mr. Kemp’s (Udo Kier) reception, the film is simply unmatched.

Be warned, because Ace Ventura dates back to 1994, and nearly thirty years later, we can’t say his humor has always aged well. Witness the overtly transphobic scene near the end of the film, as well as the homophobic scene that would be far more disturbing today than it was back then.

However, in the United States, Ace Ventura was the first of three Jim Carrey films to be released in 1994. It was released on February 4 and became an instant hit with $107 million. The actor next stars in The Mask (July 29) and Dumb & Dumber (December 16), which grossed $351.5 million and $247 million, respectively. Considering the small budget, including for The Mask, which cost “only” 23 million, all are triumphs.

Ace Ventura will have a sequel set in Africa, but there will also be an animated series and The Adventures of Ace Ventura Jr. Ace Ventura in Africa is also available on the Netflix platform and it pushes the sliders even further!
