When John Wick meets Raid! Brutal and brutal, the Farang trailer will appeal to action lovers. Xavier Gens, director of Hitman, Frontière(s) and most recently Gangs of London, returns to cinema.
Farang tells the story of Sam, played by Nasim Lies (Made in France, The Last Mercenary, Passing by Pecho). The latter is an exemplary prisoner. In the months before his release from prison, he diligently prepares for reintegration. While on vacation, his past catches up with him and an accident leaves him with only one choice: escape.
Five years later, he rebuilt his life in Thailand, where he started the family he had always dreamed of. But Narong, the local godfather, forces him to plunge back into crime. When Sam wants to end it all, Narong attacks his family… Sam plans to cross Thailand to get revenge on the executioner.
The first images of the film strongly follow the diptych The Raid, directed by Gareth Evans in 2011 and 2014. Extremely violent, these films greatly influenced modern action cinema. We also note John Wick’s touch for stylized, intense and ultra-nervous choreography.

Stunt choreography was curated by Measure of the Trade: Jude Poyer. The latter has worked with the biggest action stars and has an impressive filmography: Ip Man 4 with Donnie Yen, Piège à Hong Kong with Van Damme or Le Médaillon with Jackie Chan.
He also worked in blockbusters such as The Da Vinci Code, Star Wars 7, Grimsby or Transformers The Last Knight. Before Farang, he had already collaborated with Xavier Gens in the British TV series Gangs of London, which was created by The Raid director Gareth Evans.
Note the casting of Olivier Gourmand as the bad guy. He plays an immigrant godfather who promises to be sharp. Vithai Pansringarm, most notably seen in Only God Forgives alongside Ryan Gosling, also stars in the game.
“This villain is not a character that’s going to say that. So I tried to find a real actor, not Kaid. At one point someone whispered in my ear that they should offer the role to Booba, which was totally. Inappropriate.
Olivier Gourmand, with his simple presence, tells you a story, brings you back to his social background with the Dardenne brothers… and finally, you don’t need to develop too much.”Xavier Gens explained in the columns MadMovies.
Farang, a French take on The Raid, lands on June 28 in Darkrooms. After the success of AKA with Alban Lenoir on Netflix, seeing such a heavy French action hit is great news for fans of the genre!
Xavier Gens is also turning to the popular streaming platform for his next feature, the as-yet-untitled Shark Movie. Nasim Lies will play the main role again.
