Competitors, however, will operate under a neutral flag
The president of the Italian National Olympic Committee (Coni), Giovanni Malagò, has authorized Russian athletes to participate in upcoming sports competitions in the country, but under a neutral flag.
The invasion of Ukraine had a negative impact on sports in Russia, as the nation’s athletes were banned from numerous tournaments as a result of the conflict.
The first competition affected by Italy’s decision will be the Fencing World Cup in Milan, which will take place from 22 to 30 July.
“The restrictions and obligations to which they were subjected displeased both the Russians and the Belarusians. Of the 39 athletes classified at the fencing World Championships, 11 were unable to participate, including the daughter of the president of the Russian Olympic Committee”, said Malagò.
The coach also quoted Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev, winner of the Rome Open, Italy, over Denmark’s Holger Rune.
“The Russian Medvedev won the tournament in Rome and was applauded by the public and also by the ministers. Why can’t this also apply to other sports? It’s not very clear”, commented Malagò.
The 2022 edition of the World Fencing Championships, held in Egypt, did not see the participation of Russia, the fifth biggest medalist in the competition, behind only Italy, France, Hungary and the Soviet Union. .
