At the age of 10, student Mariana Bueno Tamani has no doubts about which profession she wants to pursue. Inspired by her grandmother and her love of science, the little girl dreams of becoming a researcher. An aspiration that is not only part of your future, but also part of your present. The resident of Limeira, in the hinterland of São Paulo, not only has her microscope, but she also has an article published in a scientific journal.

With the help of a physics professor at her school, Mariana devoted a year to an experiment that analyzed the counterfeit coins of colonial Brazil. The work turned into a three-page article entitled “Uma Conversa Além do Cofrinho”, which was published in the magazine science todaycoordinated by the Rio de Janeiro units and aimed at children.

A feat that gives Marina the title of the youngest Brazilian to have an article published, as pointed out by adviser Yuri Meyer, postdoctoral fellow at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) and professor at Colégio Jandyra – where the little girl studies researcher.

Mariana’s mother, Raquel Tamani, reports that her daughter’s interest in the research area came about spontaneously. While everyone in her school kept an eye on TikTok trends and trending online games, Mariana revealed to her parents an unusual wish: to have a microscope.

“We [mãe e pai] I was in the living room and Mariana said to me: ‘Mom, I want to win a microscope'”, says Raquel, who revealed that she was surprised by the request and stressed that the price of the gift was half the value of the cellphones and tablets that the children use today.

The discovery of the student’s interest in research was a source of pride for the whole family. “We place great value on studies and research,” emphasized the mother. According to her, the main reference of the young woman is her grandmother Miralda Bueno de Paula.

Miralda graduated from the Federal University of Lavras, Minas Gerais. She holds a master’s degree and a doctorate in the field of soils, she was a researcher at the Brazilian Agricultural Research Society (Embrapa) and the Agricultural Research Society of Minas Gerais (Epamig). You have taught at universities, but have devoted your career to research.

Dedication to research from an early age

Yuri reports that mentoring such a young and dedicated student with such a desire to transform the world through research was not only a great gift, but also a challenge. “It was my first time supervising such a young student. I was used to working with high school and university students. I needed to connect with Mari, with her family and think of playful ways so that she didn’t lose interest in the research,” says the guide.

Through dynamics, conversations and recreational activities involving science, the professor introduced Mariana to the world of research. As she explains, the research evaluated corrosion, density and even used mathematical formulas to validate the process.

To finalize her research, Mariana dedicated a few hours of her weekends to researching and analyzing the ancient coins under her microscope. It was a process that lasted 1 year. In the first semester, the student devoted herself to academic language and reading academic papers. The second semester focused on the experimental part.

“After the experimental part, we planned a microscopy [técnica de análise que utiliza um microscópio para examinar objetos] in professional equipment at Campinas State University to validate the processes Mariana was researching at home with her microscope,” explains the professor, who points out that guiding and teaching the stages of scientific methodology for Mariana was a big step in her career .
