‘The Knights of the Zodiac’ is not ‘Dragonball Evolution’, but it is far from being the best adaptation of the anime that conquered our childhood

Without the force of Pegasus

When we saw the first images of ‘The Knights of the Zodiac’ we feared the worst. The look of the armor, the CGI, the suspicions of where the story was going to go… Everything pointed to a fiasco of epic proportions at the level of ‘Dragonball Evolution’, one of the worst movies ever and an example of how NOT to adapt a Japanese manga/anime into a westernized live action movie. And the truth is that many of those suspicions have turned out to be certain, but… let’s not pass either.

‘The Knights of the Zodiac’ differs from ‘Dragonball Evolution’ in that, if we did not know the source material, It could pass for an action movie from the back catalog of, for example, Netflix movies. That is to say, it won’t be on the best of the year lists, but it can be used to have a good time without wanting to tear your eyes out of their sockets, which is what happened with ‘Dragonball Evolution’. It has reliable interpreters like Sean Bean, Famke Jenssen or the eternally young Mark Dacascos, decisive fight scenes to the ‘Mortal Kombat’ and costumes and powers that remind us of the ‘Power Rangers’. The problem? so what It has nothing to do with the original manga and anime of ‘The Knights of the Zodiac’.

We miss the camaraderie between Knights, more than anything because only two appear, the protagonist Seiya (Pegasus) and the villain Ikki (Phoenix). And this is probably because those responsible are thinking of selling a saga before a movie, and that leaves us without seeing Shiryū (Dragon), Shun (Andromeda) and Hyōga (Swan), fundamental protagonists of the series with which we grew up as children, on the big screen, saving them for a sequel that (we can be sure of affirming) It will never happen. We could perhaps hope that Saga (Gemini), the great villain of the anime, would not appear, or that they would reserve it for a post-credits scene that would increase the hype for continuing the franchise, but not that ‘The Knights of the Zodiac’ literally had only one Knight.

The armors, which take almost an hour and a half to appear, are perhaps the worst part of the film. It is clear that ‘The Knights of the Zodiac’ does not have the budget of a Marvel movie, but 60 million should go for much more. The CGI has unfortunate moments, with scenes that seem taken from the latest production of ‘The Asylum’, but the armor is not a matter of money, but of imagination. The design has nothing to do with the original armor from the manga and anime, and that is a key aspect (perhaps the biggest of the keys) for the public of fans who go to the movies. The series conquered us more than 35 years ago for its characters, their powers and their armor, and in this film there is no trace of them. ‘The Knights of the Zodiac’ has more of ‘Star Wars’, comparing the Cosmos with the Force, than of the creation of Masami Kurumada. And with that all would be said.

We also miss the mythical ‘heroes song‘ from the animated intro, but that’s justified because the tune was actually a translation of the French version and not the original Japanese one. But what could (should) have slipped through, even if it was a translation of his own, is the iconic “Give me your strength, Pegasus!“. In the original subtitled version of the film, which is the one that has been offered to the media, there is no trace of this phrase, so we can venture that it will not be heard in the dubbed version either. And without that scream, These are definitely not ‘The Knights of the Zodiac’.
