Four years after Sibyl, French director Justine Triet returned to the competition with a thriller and experimental film. Led by German actress Sandra Hüller (who we envisioned to win the prize for the interpretation of a woman and also the Grand Prix in the credits), this disturbing portrait of a woman failed to impress the jury.

In his speech, the director will pay tribute to the author of the book from which the feature film is inspired. Martin Amis died on May 19, the day of the first official screening of The Zone of Interest.

Best Director Award: Tran Anh Hung for La Passion de Dodin Bouffant – released on November 8

Indeed, the staging is what creates the flavor of La Passion de Dodin Bouffant. From the opening scene, we delve into the kitchens of enthusiasts preparing a magnificent gourmet dinner. The gestures are precise, sensual as they are slow and well thought out, the camera is ethereal. Celebrity chef Pierre Gageria is said to be a consultant on the film, giving it a rare culinary/artistic authenticity.

A work of collaboration, harmonious duets (including the one the director created with his artistic director and former partner Ian Khes, to whom the film is dedicated), Dodin Buffan’s passion is also kept in mind thanks to the parallel he draws between cooking. Art and the art of love. Here again, the staging is lavish, combining sensuality, sense-seeking, good food and meat into one indulgence. The guarantors of this perfect orchestration: the greats Juliette Binoche and Benoit Magimel, assembled under the expert eye of a director who, like us, is under a spell.

Les Feuilles mortes tells the story of the meeting of two loners in Helsinki, budding love, fate and everyday life that will take care of their heads. The film skillfully combines humor, drama, sentimental comedy and social criticism. Very accessible, this film was one of the shortest on offer this year, at 1 hr. at 9 p.m.

While absent from the ceremony, director Aki Kaurismaki said he was “It’s a deep honor” A prize that ends, like a good rock ‘n’ roll fan, with a “twist and shout,” a reference to the famous piece composed by The Top Notes and popularized by The Beatles.

Screenplay Prize: Monster – Release Unknown

Of all the awards that Hirokazu Kore-eda and his films have received (in particular, the 2018 Palme d’Or), he has never returned to the screenplay. Until this year and Monster, one of the feature films he directed but did not write. Because it is to Yuji Sakamoto that we owe the structure of this magnificent drama into three acts and as many coherent points of view, allowing the plot to be rewritten and reinvented from one part to the next to better convey the emotion at the end. The first contender for this edition’s competition immediately became obvious to many viewers of this cup. who was therefore righteous.

Best Actress Award: Eighth Dizdar (Dry Herbs) – Released on 12 July 2023

The predictions were helpful Sandra Huler (for Zone of Interest or Anatomy of the Fall) and Alicia Vikander (Playing Queen), but the eighth Dizdar prevented them, to everyone’s surprise. including his. The actress was indeed surprised to receive this much-deserved Best Actress award as she covers Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s (very) feature film Dry Herbs. Best Actor Award: Koji Yakusho (Perfect Days) – Released November 29, 2023

In Wim Wenders’ melancholic and poetic Perfect Days, Japanese actor Koji Yakusho plays a man who cleans public toilets in Tokyo. In his simple life and highly structured daily life, he is simply a seeker of happiness, someone who finds small pleasures in listening to music, reading books and photographing trees. Koji Yakusho is quite incredible in this role. With an almost silent performance, the Japanese manages to move with a smile, a look, a gesture… and makes us look at the world simply, almost with the eyes of a child. 100% deserved award.
