If you rule out the occasional mid-season layoff or cast member departures due to creative differences, there are usually two distinct times when people leave. Live Saturday night: Either immediately after the end of the season or just before the start of the new season. Earlier this month, we had the first batch of releases that match the ending. It’s summer now and people are wondering if we will have any releases before the new season. Let the recording show that Michael Che will not be a part of these releases. Well, at least not probably.
The popular weekend update host has appeared on Bill Simmons podcast on The Ringer last week, and during the conversation he was asked about his future on SNL. He has been the subject of rumors that he unleashed a few months ago but silenced them for the season. But now that the season is over, many are starting to ask the question again. Well, it was a bit vague in his response to Simmons, but overall it seems like good news for anyone who wants to see him again. Here is a part of the quote from him …
I think I’ll stay. I think I’ll stay. I do not know. This is the thing. I never know. Once the season is over, it’s best not to make such decisions towards the end of the year, because all you want to do is get out of it. You feel like you’ve had enough, but August or September is usually a different story. But I haven’t planned to leave yet.
Since he’s Bill Simmons and runs a sports podcast, the two obviously used the previous conversation to then criticize Tom Brady for his retirement, and then almost immediately canceled his retirement earlier this year. But the comparison actually makes a lot of sense. The NFL season, like Live Saturday night, it is an emotionally intense experience that consumes a lot of time. At the end of each season most people are ready for a break, but with some time most people recharge and want to come back.
when Live Saturday night returns next season, presumably with Michael Che sitting next to Colin Jost at the weekend update desk, there will be plenty of airtime available. While we don’t see any other releases just before the new season starts, many established players who aren’t ready for prime time have hung their cues on the wall this year. Kate McKinnon, Pete Davidson, Aidy Bryant and Kyle Mooney all left the show.
Collectively, they’ve missed a few episodes in recent years while working on other projects, but their collective voice has marked the show for a long time, most notably McKinnon and Bryant. Davidson and Mooney were famous actors, most notably Davidson, but the two often did their thing. McKinnon and Bryant, when featured, have appeared in a number of sketches, both playing the lead role and lending their talents to support other cast members. They will leave a great void.
As for Che, he continues to be strong alongside Jost at the Weekend Update Desk, even though Kanye West wants him to leave. The two first teamed up in 2014. The early years were a bit awkward at times, but they eventually found a great pace and are now the longest-running partnership in the history of the segment. As long as there are no unexpected changes, it will be nice to see them again at Studio 8H when the show returns for season 48.
