The first part of the fourth season of “Stranger Things” premiered on Netflix last Friday (27) and its return has once again placed the series on Twitter trending and among the most viewed in the Top 10 of the streaming. Famous for its strong ties to horror classics, the new sequel bet heavily on the premise and was based on at least six such hits.
Since its first season, Stranger has been based on popular pop culture films. In the case of horror productions, the series uses the villains’ modus operandis to develop the saga, honoring and connecting with the franchises. Among the films this season, for example, are strong references to Freddy Krueger, from “A Nightmare on Elm Street”, and JigSaw, from “Saw”. For those familiar with the franchises, remember that Krueger kills in dreams and that JigSaw wants to punish people for their mistakes – familiar aspects in the current season of “Stranger Things”.
Two other productions related to the series are “Halloween” and “The Exorcist”. In the first, notorious serial killer Michael Myers is named by Eddie’s (Joseph Quinn) uncle when he talks to Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) about Chrissy’s (Grace Van Dien) death. The second – considered a classic of the classics – is mentioned by Robin (Maya Hawke), when the character is also with Nancy doing research in the library.
Another hit used by “Stranger Things” is “It: A Coisa”. In fact, when the film was released in 2017, it came with many similarities to the series, which came out a year earlier, in 2016. So, it’s fitting that now Netflix is also leveraging the ideas of the feature film, using, for example, the range of time for the new villain to appear (in “It” he appeared every 27 years, in “Stranger Things” everything indicates that he is every 30). Another reference is the exploration of the “nest” of creatures; in the film, the group of children visit Pennywise’s house, as in the fourth season of Stranger.
Of course, it’s worth mentioning that “It” is based on the Stephen King novel originally published in 1986. That is, both the film and the series actually follow the book, which is the forerunner of plots.
The sixth film we have decided to mention is therefore nothing new. “Ghostbusters” has already been in other seasons of “Stranger Things” with the actors, including, dressed as long characters. Now once again the classic has been introduced by an emblem on a Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) backpack.
The second part of “Stranger Things” arrives on Netflix on July 1st. Created by the Duffers Brothers, the fourth season is also based on the ideas of “Game of Thrones”, according to the creators themselves. “We jokingly called our Game of Thrones season because it’s so complex, so I think that’s what’s unique or most unique about the season,” said Matt Duffer.
