Former San Paolo defender Morato celebrates the Portuguese title with Benfica

Defender Morato, a former São Paulo player, is now part of Benfica’s defensive system and helped the club win their 38th Portuguese title. The conquest only came in the last round, after the 3-0 win against Santa Clara.

“It is undoubtedly the most special moment of my career. I have always dreamed of becoming a player, playing for big teams and being able to celebrate titles like this. Playing at the packed Estádio da Luz on a day of celebration is an incredible experience. Let’s celebrate . so much,” praised the athlete.

Morato has been at Benfica since 2019, when he was signed by São Paulo to be part of the Portuguese side’s B squad. In the last game he was the only Brazilian in the squad, which also includes Lucas Veríssimo, David Neres and Gilberto.

Benfica’s domestic title this season also ended a four-year trophy drought for the club.

“The fans were suffocating and so were we, because we are Benfiquistas and this drought is very unusual in these parts. This trophy capped off a fantastic season for our team. We were better from start to finish,” he analysed.

Benfica capped off an almost flawless season with the Portuguese title. At one point, they went 28 matches without defeat when adding up all competitions played and a sequence of seven triumphs to start the Portuguese league. In the Champions League, the Lisbon club finished first in a group that included PSG and Juventus.

“It was an excellent season, and we owe it a lot to the players who accepted Mister’s idea. He brought an aggressive game proposal and a winning mentality to our locker rooms,” he concluded.

In total, Morato played 21 matches this season, scored one goal and lifted his first trophy for the Portuguese club.
