Russia says it repulsed border incursion; Kiev attack kills 3

Russia said on Thursday it had repelled more cross-border attacks from Ukraine, while its relentless air strikes on Kiev have killed three more people, including a 9-year-old girl and her mother trapped outside a bomb shelter.

Both sides are seeking to undermine morale and weaken enemy military capability ahead of a long-promised Ukrainian counteroffensive against a 15-month-old Russian invasion.

The war has killed tens of thousands, displaced millions, destroyed Ukrainian cities and led to increasing attacks on Russian soil.

Russia’s defense ministry said its troops thwarted three raid attempts near the western city of Shebekino, killing 30 Ukrainian fighters and destroying four armored vehicles.

Earlier, the Russian Volunteer Corps (RVC), a far-right Russian paramilitary group that supports Ukraine, said it was fighting inside Russia. Kiev denies direct involvement, but Moscow accuses it of masterminding the attacks.

Belgorod region governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said the Ukrainian military repeatedly bombed Shebekino with Soviet-designed 122mm Grad rockets, setting fire to a dormitory and damaging an administration building.

At least nine civilians were injured, he said, with hundreds of children, women and the elderly evacuated. An unverified video showed a fire in a large building in Shebekino.

In Kiev, Ukraine said it had shot down 10 Iskander cruise and ballistic missiles in Russia’s 18th attack on the capital since early May. But a 9-year-old mother and her mother and another woman died when rocket debris landed near a bomb shelter they were trying to enter.

“The entrance was closed, there were already five to 10 women with children there,” said local resident Yaroslav Ryabchuk. “They knocked hard… they tried to enter the shelter, no one opened for them. My wife is dead”.

Russia denies targeting civilians or committing war crimes, but its forces have devastated Ukrainian cities and repeatedly hit residential areas since the February 24, 2022, invasion.
