Tonight on TV: The movie that finally turned Stallone into a movie icon

In 1976, The Rock, the story of a boxer who starts from scratch and achieves his championship dreams against all odds, won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Overnight, Sylvester Stallone, screenwriter and lead actor, rose to international stardom.

This success led director Ted Kotchef to offer him, in 1982, to become the headliner of another action film that would name his career: Rambo. Adapted from the novel first blood By David Morrell, which appeared a decade earlier, the script deals with the difficult reintegration of Vietnam War veterans into a hip and moralizing America. The hero, John Rambo, is described here as a raging psychopath and a ruthless killer. Sylvester Stallone rewrites him in a different prism to make him a more nuanced character: a victim of the army and society.

anti-war pamphlet, Rambo is as much for Stallone’s physical performance (who broke three ribs during a scene where he jumps into a ravine) as it is for the intelligence of his subject. Like Journey to the End of Hell or Apocalypse Now, the film dares to talk about the devastating effects of the Vietnam War on veterans.

Made on a budget of $15 million, Rambo brings in 125 million worldwide. In France, it attracts more than 3 million viewers to theaters.
