Striking Hollywood screenwriters have gained a new concern: Artificial Intelligence (AI). In fact, technology is already a concern for the sector and, with the shutdown in place since May 2, insiders plan to negotiate fairer forms of remuneration and credits with studios in view of the expansion of the use of AI in cinema.

Is Artificial Intelligence Threatening Screenwriters?
Union members and players can already imagine situations where studios can try to get the better of the use of AI: by cutting costs with professionals or by repurposing already paid material and producing new content from it.

Therefore, the use of AI in the production of screenplays will be one of the topics of the negotiations between the Screenwriters Guild and the Hollywood studios. Debates are due to start on June 7.
On the one hand, the studios were excited about how AI can do the work of the professional, as well as do it in less time and, obviously, without remuneration. This, however, comes with copyright and intellectual property issues, as generative AI only takes advantage of content that is already available online, created by other people.
The union, according to chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, wants to ensure that screenwriters have control over what becomes of their work and that studios pay them adequately.
The name, the look, the voice, the person of the artist: these are the values and the craft of the artist. It’s really not fair that companies try to take advantage of this and not compensate artists fairly when they use their persona in this way.

Cinema and artificial intelligence
Some actors have already locked down and signed off on specific uses of AI.
In the next movie Indiana Jones, Harrison Ford appears in a younger version of 40 years. In this case, the AI exploited the actor’s images in the releases of the franchise in the 80s.
92-year-old James Earl Jones also agreed to allow the AI to replicate Darth Vader’s voice, so that the character would continue in his recorded voice.
recycled content
Union members, however, bring another point to the debate by ridiculing AI.
Producer Justine Bateman, a former Union board member, reinforces how technology only mimics content that has already been produced, and that this undermines the film and arts industry as a whole.
I don’t want to live in that world. What is the next genre in cinema? What’s the next music genre? You will never see anything like this if we all use artificial intelligence.
Justin Batman
The Union is expected to return to negotiating this and other points with the studios next week.
