Released in December 2021, The King’s Man: First Mission will land on Disney+. The events of the film take place long before the first part of the Kingsman franchise, during the First World War.
Ralph Fiennes plays spy Orlando, the Duke of Oxford, on a mission to stop a criminal organization led by a man named Shepherd. This group consists of real historical figures such as Vladimir Lenin or Grigory Rasputin. Their goal is simple: to destroy the monarchies of Europe and Russia.
The Kingsman saga is known for its humor and irreverent tone. This prequel is no exception to the rule and delights in combining real historical moments with a fantasy spy story.
The post-credits scene pushes the cursor even further, even if it means making a Matthew Vaughn film look ridiculous—a choice that’s a given when you know the director’s style.
As the credits roll, the audience reunites with one of the film’s antagonists, Erik Jan Hanussen, played by Daniel Brühl, with statesman Lenin. “Thanks to you, our left wing is strong, but the right wing needs strengtheningHanusen explains. That’s when the third character comes in.
We first see a rather familiar shadow, then a face. “This young man will be your rival in this world, my friend– Hanusen tells Lenin. Music plays and the man reveals his name: Adolf Hitler.
The character appears early in the film, but his identity, until this point, has never been revealed. The Dictator’s arrival in the Kingsman universe sets him up as the likely big bad of the sequel — which, as of now, hasn’t officially started.
Actor David Cross as Adolf Hitler in The King’s Man.
If the idea can be defended – the intrigue of Kingsman during the rise of the Führer is not without interest – but the execution raises questions. Just as Marvel Studios introduces a new villain in a post-credits scene, the future leader of the Nazi Party appears on screen to surprise. The result is quite embarrassing.
It is very likely that many viewers could have missed this sequence when the film was released in theaters. But months later, this post-credits scene is still being talked about on social media:
