Leaders around the world mourned the tragedy
At least 288 people have died and hundreds have been injured in a collision involving three trains in India, the country’s worst train crash in more than two decades.
The disaster occurred near the city of Balasore, in the state of Odisha, and left some wagons completely destroyed by the force of the impact.
An express train from Bangalore bound for Calcutta derailed, coming to rest on adjacent tracks. Soon after, another express train, traveling between Calcutta and Chennai collided with the former. After the crash, some of the carriages also collided with a cargo train parked nearby.
The Odisha relief service counts at least 288 dead, but the toll is set to worsen, as there are still hundreds injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flew by helicopter over the scene of the tragedy and will visit passengers hospitalized in Balasore hospitals, where citizens spent the night in line to donate blood.
“In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families,” she wrote on Twitter. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Railways has announced a contribution of 1 million rupees (about R$ 60,000) for the families of the victims and 200,000 rupees (R$ 12,000) for the most seriously injured.
Leaders around the world mourned the incident, including Pope Francis, who sent a telegram to the Apostolic Nuncio to India, Leopoldo Girelli. The text reads that the pontiff was “deeply saddened” and assured his “spiritual closeness to those affected by this tragedy”.
For her part, the Italian premier Giorgia Meloni expressed “deep condolences for the victims of the dramatic train accident in Odisha”. “Friendship and solidarity, from me and the Italian government, to Narendra Modi and to all the Indian people in this tragic moment”, added the prime minister on Twitter.
